Urbanscape’ is the manifestation of the built environment of cities. It not only refers to the configuration of built forms but also the elements that define interstitial spaces. It represents physical built environment of our city. However, what we see today is the progression of ever-increasing skyscrapers that mark the skyscape of a city, overpowering smaller elements. This plays a major role in defining urban landscape.
Through the theme, ‘Urbanscape’, we seek to explore urban furniture designs that not only enriches the built environment but also improves the quality of such interstitial spaces. Furthermore, the design should suit and enhance the beauty of an urban setup.
It should be a forward-thinking product with the intent to create a useful, functional and sustainable product. We expect original, creative and innovative ideas to furnish such interstitial spaces without ignoring the existing problems.
Additionally, the design of the urban furniture should adhere to the following points.:

Alexander Lotersztain is an Argentinian born Australian designer and founder of the multidisciplinary design studio Derlot. This highly awarded studio specialises in product, furniture and interior design, as well as hotel concepts, branding and art direction with a long list of international clients.
These include; Idee (Japan), Planex (Australia), Sigg (Switzerland), Asahi (Japan), Mizuno (Japan), UFL (New Zealand), Escofet (Spain), Nestle (Switzerland), Superior (Australia), Ivanka (Hungary), The Queensland Art Gallery (Australia) and Australia’s first Design Hotel, Limes Hotel in Brisbane.
In 2011, Alexander expanded his studio by founding Derlot Editions to design, manufacture and distribute furniture and lighting to the global contract and domestic markets.
His work appears in design journals around the world and can be found in the collection of the Pompidou Museum in Paris. He is highly awarded in both product and interior design and in 2010 he was bestowed the inaugural Queensland Premier’s Smart State Designer of the Year fellowship award. He was named one of the 100 most influential designers worldwide in &Fork by Phaidon and among the top 25 designers to collaborate with by Monocle.Alexander is design advisor to a number of private and government projects. He regularly presents at conferences such as TEDx and often participates on design judging panels, both in Australia and abroad. He has also appeared on Australian television, as a mentor to contestants of The Renovators.
Pravinsinh Solanki is an Industrial Designer with specialization in Furniture and Interior Design from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. He has worked for various high profile Architecture, Interior and Event Design Projects in India. In 2006 he started working with ‘Grottini Srl.’, a leading Italian Retail Design company in Portorecanti, Italy. After gaining rich experience in Designing and Executing Retail Stores around the world, Solanki joined “CRS Strategic Designs” in Torino, Italy as a CEO. He returned back to Delhi to set up the Furniture Manufacturing Company for the CRS. He has shown great expertise in setting up furniture units, sourcing, production, execution and cost cutting.
With all his rich experience he was invited to teach at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad in 2013. He Heads the Furniture & Interior Department and teaches Space Planning, Retail Store Design, Design Detailing, Construction & Fabrication and Design Management. He also looks after restoring the classic prototypes at NID which were designed by world class designers. Solanki was also a Jury member for India Design mark and visiting faculty for various Design schools.
Pravinsinh is also the founder of Scrap Design Innovation through which he inspires people to Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. He’s conducted many courses and workshops in India and abroad to educate the masses about conserving resources and create Wealth out of Waste. Pravinsinh is also the Head of International Centre for Indian Crafts which works on Craft documentation, skill development and design innovation in Crafts.
Stephan Hertzog established together with Flemming Busk their successful studio busk+hertzog in Denmark in 2000. Today, their recognition goes far beyond Scandinavian borders.
Their studio has won more than 70 of the most prestigious international design awards, making them the most award-winning Danish furniture designers of their generation. Several of their designs are part of permanent exhibitions at design museums around the world.
Born in Denmark in 1969, Stephan Hertzog comes from a German-Norwegian-Danish background and started his professional career in the garment industry. He graduated from Teko-Center Denmark in 1989 and spent his first years working for Danish clothing manufacturers. In 1992 he took up employment at one of Europe’s largest textile producers as a technical consultant, later as division manager and finally as managing director for Scandinavia. Through his employment he worked closely with some of the fashion industry’s top brands.
When Flemming Busk and Stephan Hertzog established their design studio, it was with a very clear vision of being not only innovative and professional but also with the aim of launching a new generation of Danish Designers. Their successful revitalizing of a Danish Design industry that was mainly based on designs from the 1950’s was recognized in 2008 by the Danish furniture industry who awarded them “The Industry’s Furniture Award”. This was previously given to, among others, Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm, Verner Panton and Jørn Utzon.
Vivian Cheng founded “Vivian Design” in 2014 to provide consultancy services and promote her own art in jewellery and glass. She was awarded a special prize in the Young Designers of the Year Award in 1987, the Gift and Houseware Fair Design Award and the Governor’s Award for Industry: Consumer Product Design in 1989, after joining Lambda Industrial Limited as the head of the Product Design team. In 1995 she joined the Vocational Training Council teaching product design and later became responsible for, among others, establishing an international network with design-related organizations, schools and organizing Design activities, conferences and exhibitions. Vivian Cheng was the International Liaison Manager at the HKDI and member of the Chartered Society of Designers Hong Kong, member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Design Centre at 2002 and board member of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) (renamed as World Design Organization) from 2013-15 and was re-elected again for 2015-2017 term.
Furthermore, she was a panel member for the government and various NGOs and a jury member for various international design competition awards like the Red dot Product Design Award, Red dot Concept Award, Braun Prize, Bio 21 & 22, ADI Compasso D’Oro International Award, China Good Design Award, Canton Fair Design Awards, Gold Pin Award, Taipei International Design Award, Lotus Prize, Belgium Pavilion in Milan Expo ‘Taste of Design Competition’, Hong Kong Award for Industries, La Camber Design School adjudication, and as speaker for the Wallonia Design Week.
